How to Create a Kitchen for Entertaining

How to Create a Kitchen for Entertaining

The kitchen is the heart of a home, which is why many people congregate to this space during a party. Whether you're a gourmet chef or specialize more in frozen pizzas, so why not redesign your kitchen space with entertainment in mind? The following ideas should give you a little inspiration to get started.

1. Add Bar Seating

If you have space, bar seating around raised countertops or along a kitchen island provides the perfect space for family breakfasts, quick meals, afternoon homework sessions or mixing drinks for your friends. A raised bar just a bit higher than your countertop on the opposite side divides the space and encourages family and friends to sit down and relax while you work your culinary magic on the other side.

2. Choose Specialty Appliances Wisely

When you're entertaining in your kitchen, having the right appliances in the right spot will wow your guests and streamline your evening. A wine cooler at the end of the island where you have your bar seating, a separate refrigerator door near the serving area and warming drawers to keep prepared foods at the perfect temperature are all brilliant additions to kitchens in which entertaining is a priority.

3. Think About Clean-Up

If you hate cleaning up after a party, design your kitchen to make cleanup a breeze. Stunning porcelain floor tiles that are also easy to clean make a great choice. If you have a large family or entertain large groups, a double dishwasher might be smart. White custom cabinets can be beautiful, but if you have young children, they can also quickly become smeared with sticky handprints and splatters here and there, so you might consider a warm wood finish instead.

4. Catering Workspace

If you don't cook much but still like to entertain in your kitchen, adding a catering workspace like a butler's pantry will give catering staff the perfect area to set up, prepare food and serve without interrupting your gathering. As a bonus, you could also turn this into a drink station during parties. You and your guests will have plenty of space to create delicious concoctions.

5. Open Floor Plan

A kitchen that opens into the living room is becoming more of a staple in family homes and homes where entertaining is a priority. The ability to mingle with guests, take advantage of your living room space while preparing food or keep an eye on kids while dishing up mac and cheese for dinner makes an open floor plan attractive to many.
