The kids are home from school constantly raiding the refrigerator. Cousin Irma and her family are visiting for a few days from out of town and need to be fed. And the family likes to take plenty of picnics at a nearby park. Your kitchen gets lots of use during the summer. Before all that fun starts, follow these tips for prepping this all-important room.
Deep Clean the Room
Since you and your family will be spending more time in the kitchen, make it shine by deep-cleaning the cabinets and counters to eliminate built-up grime and grease. Kitchen Tune-Up features an easy and affordable Original Tune-Up package that makes your cabinets look like new through a proprietary wood reconditioning process.
Prep the Fridge
Containing both frost-free freezers and easy-wipe coatings, modern refrigerators pretty much take care of themselves. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give them a good cleaning before you store the summer’s bounty of fresh produce and plenty of drinks. Your food will then stay fresh and won’t absorb odors that have been trapped in the fridge since last year.
Re-organize your kitchen by putting your turkey serving dish, Santa cookie jar, and other holiday utensils back in storage. Bring your summer serving dishes, plastic glasses, and colorful summer napkins within arm’s reach by putting them in the front of your cabinets. If you need help with sorting your dishware and utensils, check out the different types of organizing and storage solutions offered by Kitchen Tune-Up.
Keep Your Cool
When the sun is out and shining into your kitchen, the space can build up heat. To prevent that from happening, lower the blinds and close the window curtains so the interior stays cooler. Make sure that your window coverings use light-colored materials that reflect the sun’s rays instead of dark colors that absorb them.
Prepare for Heavy Drinking
The hotter the weather gets, the more that you and the guests you're entertaining will be headed to your fridge to grab cold water, juices, sodas, and beer. Stock up on plenty of pitchers and ice cube trays so you’ll always have plenty of liquids and ice on hand. If your refrigerator features flexible shelves, adjust them to accept taller pitchers and bottles.
Stock Up on Snacks
Outdoor fun demands plenty of quick snacks to keep your energy up. Stock your pantry and fridge with small and light snacks. Use some baggies or small plastic containers to divide these snacks into manageable sizes. When you’re ready to head out, you can grab a package or two to get you through the day.
Pick the Right Recipes
When cooking, confine your recipes to those that don’t use the oven so your kitchen stays cool. If you must heat up your appliances, try to do it during the cooler parts of the day such as the early morning or in the evening.
