Shape Your Kitchen: Different Designs & Shapes for the Modern Kitchen

Looking through home and garden magazines might have you thinking that your kitchen is a little on the small side — perhaps a bit cramped and old-looking. While you may not be able to afford everything that you see in the high-end home improvement magazines, nothing says you can't kick your kitchen up a notch! There are a variety of different styles that you will find in modern kitchens, from an L-shaped kitchen to a galley. People are spending more time in their kitchens over the years and now consider it the heart of the home. Wouldn't you love to have a space that truly works for you and your family?

Is Your Kitchen an "Average" Size?

That question is actually a bit misleading because there really is no such thing as an "average size" kitchen! Just like your home, your kitchen is unique and it can be challenging to define what average would look like for your particular home. Kitchens come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but what's important is that you are taking full advantage of the space that you have available in your home. If the flow of energy and traffic through your kitchen is getting backed up, if you're constantly tripping over family members as you are cooking or if you can never seem to find enough cabinet space to put away your pots and pans — it may be time for a little kitchen tune-up!

Kitchens come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but what's important is that you are taking full advantage of the space that you have available in your home.

Are You Familiar With These Common Kitchen Styles?

There are five key styles that architects and designers use for kitchens, and each has its own merits.

  • In an L-shaped kitchen, two walls are shaped into an L and the majority of the cabinets and countertops are placed. This leaves the majority of the room open and takes advantage of the space well for the majority of homes.
  • With a Double-L kitchen layout, you are gaining a second workstation which is great when you have families that love to cook together. This layout works best when you have a lot of space in your kitchen area.
  • U-Shaped kitchens have a single wall that is closed and used for countertops, sinks, stoves or dishwashers. While you'll gain plenty of cabinet space, you might have trouble fitting in an island if you want one.
  • One-wall kitchens are popular in smaller homes, as they don't block traffic moving through your home. There is only a limited amount of counter space but the design is extremely easy to create and build.
  • Galley kitchens are ideal for smaller kitchens where you will be walking through the space, such as a condo or apartment. Watch out for narrow aisles or you'll be needlessly restricting foot traffic.
